True to form Team RACE closed off the 2013 season with style and panache. On Friday Nov 1 a dapper crowd of Team RACErs and spouses were on hand at Fogo Lounge to eat, drink , mingle and acknowledge the fundraising and work that goes on to keep the Big Blue Machine running. A big thanks to both Mark and Karen Cator for organizing and hosting the event. It was apparent that a good time was had by all and their efforts are greatly appreciated – from the food, drinks and all the way to the dancing!!!
As in past years there were awards and acknowledgements to be handed out. We recognized top fundraisers Scott White and Tim Peters who both cracked the $15000 mark. The $3000+ fundraisers, Jeff Miller, Dean Cutting, Richard Kunow, Jeff Flemington, Brian McGregor, Wachie, Kevin Beaudry, Joe Almedia, Doug Ohori , Michael Sharpe and Krista Marshall were all honoured with an award. Laura Quelch , who flew in from Calgary, was recognized for both her tremendous fundraising efforts as well as riding the Triple Crown and the National Kids Cancer Ride. The introduction of the Big Cog award went to Erol Blakely. However the most coveted of all awards, The Hardman Award , went to Jim Maguire. Jim rides his bike for the pure joy of simply riding. Besides riding over 10000km this year , Jim has also raised money for the Tour for Kids and brought the entire Maguire clan to the Tour for Kids Ontario. Jim you are a truly worthy winner of the award and you have set the bar high for next years recipient – well done.
We also took some time to introduce the work that is being done to launch a Senior level racing team with primary sponsors Garneau and PowerWatts on hand. The team will be a force to be reckoned with on the OCup and US stage race circuit in 2014.
Freddy Carlberg, the heart and soul of the club, was also recognized by his lovely wife Lesley. I’ve worked along side Freddy this year to help relieve him of some club duties and only now do I truly see all that he does. He organizes rides, gets us fundraising, handles member registrations, designs our kits (and we do look like pros!!!), hosts social events …. the list goes on. I know I speak for all of us when I say , we appreciate all you do for us Freddy. You keep the club humming along and bring us all together both on and off the road.
And finally big thanks to all of our sponsors – Catalyst Capital, Avison Young, PowerWatts, Boomart, Wachman Wealth Management and Paint On Demand. The commitment of our sponsors is truly amazing and allows the team to continue expanding its membership.
This year has been one of change for Team RACE. As the club has evolved, grown-up if you will , we’ve started to add some structure surrounding who we are and how we operate. Stay tuned for more updates as this evolves, but rest assured Team RACE will always be committed to engaging in a healthy active lifestyle and raising funds for kids living with and beyond cancer. There are already things in the pipeline for 2014 so stay tuned. 2014 promises to be an even better year for the entire club.
See you on the road.
